There’s something about wildflower fields that makes time feel slower. Not just in that romantic, floaty way, but in a tangible “we can actually breathe here” kind of way.

This session took place on a sunny, dewy morning in late June, just outside Virginia Beach in Pungo. If you’re not familiar with the area, picture winding farm roads, sleepy horses, and acres of land that feel totally untouched. And then, right at the edge of Fulghum Manor, a field that absolutely explodes with all the happy colors — purples, golds, fiery reds — each bloom doing its own thing, no perfection required.

I’d been dreaming of photographing here for weeks, and when this sweet family, who was brand new to professional photography, entered to win this giveaway session, I just knew we could create something both effortless and meaningful.

Book the shoot before you blink.

Because it’s the memories we make with others that are forever written in our hearts.

Photographing in wildflowers sounds whimsical, but it’s actually a full-body workout. I’m squatting, crawling, running backwards, gently dodging bees (we coexist peacefully), all while finding that just-right patch of floral coverage for each frame. The morning light gave us this warm, golden softness that felt straight out of a movie still!!

Not only was this the sweetest family, but their little girl was a literal ray of sunshine. She had just woken up from her nap and was fully in explorer mode — reaching for petals, grinning at every flower, and even cozying up in my arms mid-session while I grabbed a few shots of just Mom and Dad (and yes, sometimes I double as photographer and baby snuggler.)

I always aim to make sessions feel less like “pose and smile” and more like, “Hey, let’s hang out in a field and see what happens.” Big belly laughs, tiny hand grabs, wind-tousled hair, a soft little world that felt like it was only theirs to share… and that’s what happened. It was pure magic.

The tones from this session were golden, romantic, slightly filmy. I’m still swooning! But it’s the small stuff I remember most: the way Dad did mini “baby drops” between shots, how Mom glowed when she looked at them both, the way they naturally gravitated toward each other, even without me prompting.

I’m still so humbled that families like this trust me to capture their forever moments. Especially during seasons that move fast and feel tender in all the best ways.

Fulghum Manor’s wildflower field is seasonal, so it won’t look like this forever. But that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? That the most fleeting things are usually the ones worth capturing.

Thinking about booking a wildflower session? Here’s what to know.

Tip #1: Timing matters

The wildflower field at Fulghum Manor is seasonal, with peak blooms typically happening in late May through mid-July, and then again for a short window in early fall, usually mid-September. Timing can shift depending on the weather, so I’ll help guide you to the best dates. Morning light is ideal — softer, cooler, and perfect for littles who wake up happy (and well-fed).

Tip #2: What to wear

Really anything goes these days aside from vibrant patterns, but I generally gravitate toward neutral tones with soft textures: creams, warm beiges, muted pinks, or earthy greens. These tones complement the natural color palette of the field without clashing or overpowering. Plus its timeless!

Tip #3: Yes, there are bees, but they’re kind!

The field is full of pollinators doing their thing. I’ve never had an issue, but if you or your little ones are nervous, I’ll guide you to the calmer spots and keep movement slow and natural.

Tip #4: Sessions are relaxed and kid-led

I don’t expect your kiddos to sit still or smile perfectly. We’ll play, explore, and chase golden light. The best moments usually come when no one’s trying too hard.

Tip #5: Connection over perfection

You won’t have to worry about forcing smiles or making sure every hair is in place. The best photos come when you lean into the moment — snuggles, laughter, even a little chaos. I’ll gently guide you, but the real magic is in the way you naturally show up with your people.
