Best Family Photo Locations Near Virginia Beach
The area surrounding Virginia Beach is full of corners where time seems to pause — here are the ones I trust most for storytelling through photos.
In a place where sand meets sky and every season brings something new, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake hold so many hidden gems for documenting your family story — whether you’ve lived here for years or are just passing through.
As a family and couples photographer who was born and raised across almost all of Hampton Roads (which is composed of seven cities!), I’ve spent countless golden hours chasing light across our beaches, boardwalks, and blooming fields. These are the places my heart overflows coming back to again and again — not because they’re trendy, but because they feel like home: warm, relaxed, and full of space to just be yourselves.
From quiet nature trails to the roar of ocean waves, here are four of my favorite photo locations for families who want timeless, heartfelt images that that reflect your story — not just your pose.
1. Fulghum Manor Wildflower Field
Pungo, Virginia Beach
In the quiet countryside of Pungo, just beyond the hum of the city, you’ll find a wildflower field that seems like something out of a storybook. Fulghum Manor’s blooms change with the season — soft larkspur purples in early summer, fiery reds and golden hues by late June, and the most gorgeous mini sunflowers come fall. The soil here is sandy and well-draining, thanks to this area’s unique elevation — once the highest point in what was formerly Princess Anne County.
This part of southern Virginia Beach has deep agricultural roots. It’s the same ground that gave us the region’s beloved Pungo Strawberry Festival, and it still nourishes the blooms we wander through today. For families with young kids, this space feels like an invitation to play — full of light, color, and little pockets of joy tucked into every bloom.
2. 89th Street Beach Access
North End, Virginia Beach Oceanfront
If you’re dreaming of ocean views without the boardwalk crowds, this hidden-access beach near 89th Street is a favorite. It offers a clean, open stretch of sand, soft dunes, and the perfect view for both sunrise and sunset family sessions.
There’s something sacred about families on the shoreline — whether it’s barefoot giggles, long hugs, or parents dancing with toddlers as the waves roll in. This spot lets you move, not pose. I often let families walk together, play chase, or snuggle up under a blanket here, letting the ocean do the background work.
3. Fort Story Beach
Military Access Required
If you have access to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (military ID required), this one’s a dream. It’s where I’ve seen the clearest water in Virginia Beach — with giant, dreamy rocks and driftwood that feel straight out of a destination session.
Golden hour here hits different. The sand glows, the lighthouse adds character, and you can usually find space to roam without feeling rushed. For military families wanting a session that feels private and peaceful, Fort Story is unmatched.
4. Fair Weather Farms
Greenhouse, Studio, & Farm Animals in Hickory, Chesapeake
If you're looking for something a little more editorial (but still cozy and organic), Fair Weather Farms is one of the most sought-after locations in the Hampton Roads photography community — and for good reason. The dreamy greenhouse alone is a favorite among photographers for its natural light and timeless aesthetic, but there’s so much more to explore. From their modern white studio to the sweetest collection of farm animals, it’s a setting that offers both structure and whimsy.
This is a paid venue, so it does require a reservation and fee, but it’s absolutely worth it if you’re wanting a curated backdrop with multiple options in one place. Whether you're hoping for soft greenhouse portraits, candid moments with goats and chickens, or a cozy indoor scene, Fair Weather Farms brings a little magic to every corner.
So… Which Spot Is Right for You?
Whether you dream of the beachy vacation vibe, a romantic wildflower setting with your little ones, or something a bit off the grid, I’m passionate about helping you find the spot that feels like you.
If one of these speaks to your heart, I’d love to plan something beautiful together — reach out here to get started.
